When should 10040 be used instead of an abscess drainage code?

Use 10040 for acne-directed extraction or opening of acne lesions. A separately diagnosed abscess treated by incision and drainage may support 10060 or 10061, depending on the procedure's complexity and extent.

Can intralesional acne injections be reported as 10040?

No. 10040 describes procedural extraction or opening of acne lesions; intralesional medication injections are reported with the applicable injection code, such as 11900 or 11901.

Are related follow-up visits included?

Yes. Related postoperative visits during the 10-day global period are included in the procedure.

How does the multiple-procedure reduction affect 10040?
